FAQs
What do the Different Google Search Console Permission Levels Mean?
When you add a new user to your Google Search Console property, you’ll notice that there are different permission levels: Owner, Full, Restricted and Associate. Here’s what each means:
Owner
Each Search Console Property needs to have at least one Verified Owner that has completed the relevant verification processes. In order to do this, the Owner must prove that they own the website by using a special code, like a HTML file or tag.
Other Owners can also be added to the property, but additional users with Owner-level permissions are classified as Delegated Owners.
An Owner has full control over the properties in Google Search Console. They can:
- Add or remove other users
- Configure settings
- View all data
- Use all tools
At least one Verified Owner is needed for anyone to use the property.
Full
A Full User has the right to view all data and can take some actions, including verifying fixes and submitting URL indexing requests.
Restricted
A Restricted User has simple view rights on most data.
Associate
Associates have very specific and very limited permissions. They’re allowed to perform designated actions for a site and access particular data, but they cannot directly view or manage the Google Search Console account.
To view a complete list of actions allowed for each permission level, review the Google Search Console Users and Permissions documentation.
How Do I Change a User’s Permission Level?
To change a user’s permission levels, you first need to follow steps one to four, which are listed above. At this stage, you should have navigated to the Users and Permissions settings.
From here, you can use the drop down menu in the Permission column to select a new permission level for the user you need to update.
